Howard Elliott Receives the 2009 GBAC President’s Award
Howard Elliott ’50 was selected to receive the 2009 Greater Birmingham Auburn Club President’s Award by then president Linda Hallmark. Elliott became a member of the GBAC following the merger between the former Birmingham-Jefferson County Auburn Club and Shelby County Auburn Club in January 2007. He served tirelessly on the GBAC Board of Directors until sometime last year when he was hampered by poor health and no longer able to keep active.
Elliott, known affectionately by many as “Papa,” is a true, blue Auburn man and an inspiration to anyone who meets him. Prior to the dissolution of the Shelby County Auburn Club at the end of 2006, the Club endowed a scholarship in his name in honor of his generous support of Auburn University throughout his life. The Howard Elliott Endowed Scholarship is one of five scholarships currently maintained by the GBAC.
Although Elliott is no longer able to actively serve on the GBAC Board , he sits on the GBAC Advisory Committee and still manages to stay connected and keep up to date on current Club news and business.
“When I considered who I would select to receive the President’s Award, Howard was the obvious choice,” said Hallmark. “He is a special person and one of the most dedicated and loyal men I know, especially when it comes to supporting Auburn University.”
The GBAC President’s award is given annually by the outgoing president of the organization to a current Board member. It is a privilege bestowed upon the president to honor and recognize a board member who has demonstrated commitment and service to the GBAC and Auburn throughout the year. Hallmark is a two-time recipient of the President’s Award in her more than 10 years service on the Board.
